A Framing Analysis Of News Coverage About Poverty Alleviation By People's Daily(From 1978 To 2016)

Poverty alleviation and development is a major issue relating to the development of Chinese society.For more than 30 years of the reform and opening-up policy,the Chinese Government has made remarkable achievements in the field of poverty alleviation under the constant governance.Poverty is a problem related to people's real survival.As main sources of information to the public,The media not only transmits information on poverty management,but also plays an important role in connecting countries,the poor and other members of society.As the mainstream media of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China,People's Daily recorded the process of poverty management in China.The concept of "poverty alleviation coverage",which is used in this article,encompasses both relevant reports on poverty-stricken areas,poor groups and poverty,as well as reports on measures taken by official organizations and all sectors of society,and not only refers to the specific poverty alleviation counties.Based on the the framing analysis,this paper summarized the "news framework" used in poverty alleviation coverage by People's Daily from 1978 to 2016.In each framework,the typical texts of each frame is researched from three aspects:macro theme,meso structure and microcosm using the discourse analysis.The study found that the People's Daily has made persistent attention to poverty alleviation issues,for reporting the country's poverty management and forming high social cohesion to help the poor,which embodies its social responsibility.At the same time,the poverty alleviation coverage by People's Daily also presents two main problems:(1)Most of the news coverages on the poverty alleviation refer to "farmer" and "rural area",which causes the delayed reality reflections of the more and more complicated poverty problems both between urban and rural areas;(2)Most of the reports are covered with the main characters of both governments and donators under the frame of poverty governance.We have to admit that the poor is still marginalized in the news coverage,though the phenomenon in this research has improved compared to the previous studies.
