STEM education has attracted extensive attention in the world because of its unique advantages in the cultivation of innovative talents.However,there are still many obstacles in its development in China.The STEM Teacher Competency Standard(Trial)issued by the National Institute of Educational Sciences has provided a realistic reference for the training and testing of STEM teachers.Literature research,Delphi interview,questionnaire,interview and other methods were used in this study to sort out the research status of STEM teachers’ability at home and abroad.The STEM teaching implementation and evaluation ability index system for science teachers in primary and middle schools was built based on the STEM Teacher Competency Standard(Trial).In view of the index system,the STEM Education Implementation and Evaluation Ability of Science Teachers in Primary and Middle Schools Questionnaire was compiled,and questionnaires were conducted for science teachers in primary and middle schools across the country.Based on the statistical analysis of the survey data,the strategy of improving the STEM teaching ability is further explored.This study mainly includes the following parts:Firstly,the construction of STEM teaching implementation and evaluation ability index system for science teachers in primary and middle schools.Through in-depth interpretation of the STEM Teacher Competency Standard(Trial)’s second-level indicators,this paper clarified the requirements of teachers’STEM teaching ability.On the basis of literature research and the reality of STEM teaching in primary and middle school in China,the paper constructed the STEM teaching implementation and evaluation ability index system by using Delphi interview method to revise the indicators;Secondly,the development and application of STEM teaching implementation and evaluation capability measurement tool for science teachers in primary and secondary schools.Based on the above index system,a questionnaire was prepared to investigate the current situation of teachers’ understanding,teaching implementation and evaluation of STEM.This paper collected 446 questionnaires and obtained the following conclusions through analysis:The STEM teaching and evaluation ability of science teachers in primary and middle schools is mostly at a medium level.Among them,the STEM teaching practice ability is relatively better,while the reflection and improvement ability performance is relatively weak.The teaching age and the teaching section have relatively large influence on teachers’STEM teaching ability.However,teachers with different genders and academic qualifications show less different;Thirdly,the strategy of improving the implementation and evaluation ability of STEM teaching for science teachers in primary and secondary schools.In view of the questionnaires and interviews,it is known that improving the implementation and evaluation ability of STEM teaching for science teachers in primary and secondary schools can start from the following three aspects:attach importance to top-level planning,speed up the development of STEM curriculum standard,strengthen pre-employment training and on-the-job training,establish a community of teacher learning,improve the literacy of STEM teacher,establish a lifelong learning concept and be brave in STEM curriculum development and teaching practice.At the end of the study,combining with the exploration of the factors affecting the teacher’s STEM teaching ability,the strategy of promoting the development of existing STEM education and improving the status of teachers’STEM teaching ability was proposed.Further research is needed to continuously improve the research results to promote the reform process of STEM education in primary and secondary schools of China.
