Extracurricular tutoring refers to supplementary educational activities outside normal school education to improve students' academic performance.It includes tutoring institutions and one-on-one tutoring.Extracurricular tutoring for Chinese students is not only obvious in the stage of basic education,but also common in the stage of senior high school.The object of this study is Zhengzhou W School,a model high school in Henan Province,with elite teachers and excellent learning environment.However,most of the students in Zhengzhou W School still take part in various types of extra-curricular tutoring.What the motivation of remediation is,whether there are differences in the effect of different levels of students participating in extracurricular remediation,what the key remedial subjects are for students,and what the similarities and differences are between in-school teaching and extracurricular remediation are the key issues of this study.In this study,questionnaire survey and interview were used to investigate the above issues,and by collecting and analysing the data,the author made the following discoveries:(1)Most of the students in this school have clear motivation for extra-curricular remediation,and the remedial effect is good;(2)Upstream and middle-stream students participate in the remediation both to bring their advantages into full play and to remedy their weakness,and they are good at balancing out-of-school learning.Their remedial effect is better and reflected in the improvement of their academic performance,while the main motivation for mid-downstream and downstream students is subject remediation.It's slightly difficult for them to balance the learning in school and remediation.Their remedial effect is not as good as the upstream students' and is reflected in that there're fewer obstacles for them in learning rather than improvement in exams.(3)Mathematics is the school's most popular remedial subject;(4)The school emphasizes the management of students' behavior,while the extracurricular remedial institutions tend to cater to the needs of students;the school classroom focuses on knowledge inculcation,while the extracurricular remedial classes use diversified means to attract students.Based on the above four points and the characteristics of W school,this study puts forward the following suggestions:(1)Under the influence of student distribution policy,the structure of student source has changed a lot,which calls for transformation and reform in the school's teaching management;(2)Mathematics teaching should break the previous inherent model,paying more attention to the learning situation of middle and lower reaches students,and timely innovation of classroom teaching is necessary;(3)School management should be more flexible;improve the utilization rate of electronic reading room,and regularly carry out mental health education in each class to cope with students' learning pressure;(4)Students and parents should treat extra-curricular tutoring rationally,and improve their learning level through improving their comprehensive quality.This research has a lot of achievements.It has a strong guiding role for W school students to understand extra-curricular remedies correctly,and has a great reference significance for the school staff to improve school management and education.
