Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published the elementary school textbook Reading in2006.This set of textbooks has a great influence in the United States,and its scientific nature and effectiveness have been verified by professional organizations.This set of Houghton Mifflin elementary school reading textbooks is divided into six grades and a total of 12 books.On the basic analysis of common core state standards,this study makes a comprehensive study on this set of Reading textbooks,and strives to find its main characteristics and unique value.The strategy of Reading is more flexible,and the characteristics of improving the quality of thinking through comparative reading are more prominent.This study focuses on the use of strategies in the compilation process of this set of textbooks and how to promote the improvement of students’ thinking quality.This study has important reference value for the compilation of the reading strategies of primary school Chinese textbooks compiled by the ministry,and also has important reference value for the effective use of textbooks to carry out reading teaching.In terms of research methods,by consulting literature and comparing,an innovative function-based systematic textbook evaluation framework(CIR-FS system framework)is selected for analysis.According to the CIR-FS framework,the analysis of this set of textbooks is carried out from three aspects of course content preparation,teaching support and text presentation,among which the statistical analysis of teaching support is more in-depth.First of all,the full text of Reading is translated,and the data are sorted out by unit theme and selected text respectively.The unit theme,selected text topic,in-class exercises and various reading strategies of each text are respectively counted.Reading strategies include unit reading strategies,reading strategies suggested before text selection,reading strategies for in-class exercises,and reading strategies specifically pointed out in comparative reading.In the analysis of teaching support,the definitions of different strategies in this set of Reading textbooks are translated and explained,and the frequency of their occurrenceis counted,tabular,and the proportion of different strategies is analyzed in depth according to different grades.In addition,the author excavates and refines the strategic guidance and exercises to promote the development of thinking in this set of books,and tries to find ways and methods to improve the quality of thinking.The main conclusion of the study is that the Reading has three prominent characteristics :(1)provide specific strategy guidance,and reasonably divide the course objective into strategy skills.(2)to promote the development of students’ thinking,which is mainly reflected in the development of imagination,creativity and critical thinking.(3)highlight the value of educating people,highlight key values,and form a complete value system with different themes and styles.The main enlightenment of this study is as follows :(1)the strategic guidance of the textbook divides the big target into small target,and specifically divides it into strategic guidance to help students better master skills.(2)with the help of problem planning and text organization,textbooks can help students adapt to new problem situations,provide strategies to solve problems,and provide supportive materials for students’ learning.(3)textbooks strengthen the connection between values through reasonable planning,form a complete value system,and highlight the value of educating people.In addition,this set of textbooks also reflects a good overall view,attaches great importance to the integration of disciplines.The textbook strengthens the close relationship between different parts,so as to help students reasonably integrate the knowledge of different disciplines and construct a complete knowledge system and value system.
