In recent years, the primary school Republic Chinese textbooks are very hot, even out of stock, but the primary school Chinese textbooks has been much criticized. In this situation, many scholars have already carried out contrastive studies of the primary school Republic Textbooks and the primary school Chinese textbooks, but their studies are in the framework of pedagogy, not linguistics. Language learning is an important part of elementary school learning, the language compilation of textbooks has a great influence on children's learning. Consequently, the comparison of the language compilation of textbooks is very important.This paper is trying to make up shortcomings in the former researches, choosing the primary school Republic Chinese textbooks issued by the Commercial Press and the Chinese textbooks of The People's Publishing House. Research methods adopted are including literature researches, comparative method and statistical analysis. Hoping that by comparing the characters and words of the two teaching terms, we can find out the development and changes of characters and words in the primary school Chinese textbooks from 1912 to nowadays. We can also find out the advantages and disadvantages of PEP 's characters and words edit, and then making suggestions to the reform of the PEP edition.This paper is divided into six parts.The first part is research introduction, including dissertations reason, research subjects, research significance, the current state of the research and research methods.The second part is the general picture contrast, including the basic condition of two materials, the compiling ideas and framework's comparison of characters and words learning, the contrast of the text length.The comparison of the third part is the teaching material of characters, including the text characters and teaching characters, involves character quantiti es, character categories, the common characters, the independent characters,highfrequency characters, the rank and frequency of the new words in the text.The fourth part is the teaching material of words, including the text words and teaching words, involves word quantities, word categories, the common words, the independent words and high-frequency words, monosyllabic words and polysyllabic words.The fifth part for the two materials is idioms contrast, including the quantity, type, common idioms and independent idioms; On the basis of overall survey and generalization of the former five parts,.The sixth part analyze the two teaching material's characteristics, advantage and disadvantage in language learning, from which we can give suggestions for the reform of the elementary school Chinese textbooks.
