A Simulated C-E SI Report On Time’s Friends 2018(Excerpts)

This report is based on a simulated Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting practice conducted in January,2019.The original material is a New Year’s Eve speech called Time’s Friends 2018(Excerpts)delivered by Mr.Luo Zhenyu,founder of iGet APP.The task requires the interpreter to deliver a target text that is accurate,fluent and intelligible.The original material was with few logical connectives,which is regarded as the outstanding feature of the source text.Then how to make the implicit logic in Chinese explicit in English is the biggest challenge for the author.Regarding interpreting difficulties,there are three aspects to be discussed.(1)How to reflect implicit elaboration relation in English;(2)How to reflect implicit extension relation in English;(3)How to reflect implicit enhancement relation in English.According to the Interpretive Theory(Seleskovitch,1978),what to be interpreted is the meaning of the original text.With this guidance,the tactics are proposed as follows.(1)Adding conjunctions and converting sentence structures to make the implicit elaboration relation explicit;(2)Reorganizing,anticipating and adding conjunctions to make the implicit extension relation explicit;(3)Adding adverbs and adding attributive clauses to make the implicit enhancement relation explicit.This report investigates coping tactics for difficulties in reflecting implicit logic in Chinese in English version which will hopefully provide practical guidance for the author and other interpreters as well to better deal with implicit logic in C-E interpreting practice.
