| China has launched Double First-Class Initiative(first-class universities and first-class disciplines in the world)to enhance the comprehensive strength and international competitiveness of higher education.Standing in the forefront of international cultural and educational exchanges,Shanghai's Double First-Class universities are expected to promote their future plans on educational exchanges among overseas institutes and universities.In the process of translating Chinese news texts,translators may come across typical difficulties in message delivery related to such textual aspects as figure of speech,sentence pattern and paragraph structure that require translation strategies like addition,deletion,conversion,logic analysis and restructuring.This thesis,taking the translation of news texts of Shanghai “Double First-Class”universities as an example,discusses problems in information delivery when translating Chinese news texts,and explores corresponding message delivery strategies.The thesis introduces the case of the Chinese-English translation project of news texts of Shanghai “Double First-Class”,discusses its writing style,text function,translation requirements,and analyzes the textual features of the source texts which may cause difficulties of information delivery in translation,including the conversion of figurative words,repetition of similar information and lack of logic in parallel sentences,and hidden key sentences and mixed messages in paragraphs.Through comparing initial translation with the finalized version after review,this thesis provides translators with message delivery strategies that can be adopted in news texts translation,including hidden information supplementary;information combination and logic explanation;and sentence order adjustment and restructuring.The thesis aims to not only summarize translator's experience and lessons from this project,but also provide references for other translators in their Chinese-English translation of news texts. |
