A Report On The Translation Of Croatia In The Heart Of Europe:Mediterranean And Central European Cultural Landscapes Of Croatia(Chapter Two)

This is a translation practice report on the translation of Croatia in the Heart of Europe: Mediterranean and Central European Cultural Landscapes of Croatia.The translator selects the second chapter as the source text: an introduction to Croatia’s architectural monuments,sculptures and city planning as well as the relative historical background.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this report discusses the translation of cultural nonfiction text.According to Newmark’s classification of text types,the source text belongs to the informative and vocative text,with conveying information and producing results as the main function.Thus,communicative translation should be applied in the translation of such text,so as to produce the language style and expression habit that can be best accepted by the readers of the target text,to introduce the culture of Croatia to target readers,and to enhance the exchanges and understanding between China and Croatia.At the same time,to assure that the readers read the text pleasantly without much effort,the translator should flexibly deal with the cultural elements,especially the cultural gap.With the guidance of communicative translation theory,various translation methods including annotation and addition can be applied to minimize the cultural gap.In the translation of long and complex sentences,the translation methods such as conversion and structural adjustment can be adopted so as to express the contents and cultural elements in the source text to the target readers in a fluent and smooth way.In addition,this translation practice is of great significance in examining and developing the application of communicative translation theory in the cultural text translation.At the same time,it provides references for domestic researchers and scholars in their study of Croatia.
