| Everyone should be entitled to safe drinking water and sanitation which composes a fundamental human necessity. It could also make a crucial difference to the achievement of the grand objectives of the 2030 agenda for eternal development:from food and energy security to economic development and environmental sustainability. However,as UN World Water Development Report shows, not all places are provided with average water services, with nearly one-third of the world’s population drinking unmanaged water, and only two-fifths of the population able to pay off the safe sanitation services. For the translation,in the pre-translation process, the author has consulted the relevant reports of the water conservancy industry in advance, and become familiar with the technical vocabulary and text characteristics of the water conservancy, and tries to grasp different translation methods for such texts. Finally, the author chose Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as guidance to the translation of some parts of the report. In his book Approaches to Translation,Peter Newmark put forward semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory and classifies texts into three categories, including expressive, informative and vocative texts.Generally speaking,he explained and distinguished the two methods that ST focuses on the semantic content of source text while CT on the effect or results of target text.Meanwhile, with the analysis of text types,he insisted that semantic translation applies to translate expressive texts and communicative translation is appropriate in informative or vocative texts, which has provided some new sights for the translation process. When confronted with barriers of cultural transmission, translators often fall into the dilemma between the original meaning and target rendering.Communicative translation theory encourages that the target language reader should be considered firstly,in which communication functions should be emphasized. Therefore, communicative translation theory will be well applied in the translation of informative texts such as UN World Water Development Report.By analyzing the translation of words, sentences and texts, the author takes a new look into the theory of communicative translation and draws her own conclusion and summarizes her strategies in dealing with various difficult situations in translation. It also theoretically and practically sheds light on the advancement of the quality of translation and the encouragement of cross-cultural communication. |
