Stepping into the 21stcentury,it is witnessed that economy has grown dramatically,with more convenient,readily available and affordable transportation following it,which of course accelerates the development of tourism.And further,people will find dwelling life so exhausting and hasty that they have no time to enjoy life.In this case,someone decides to tour abroad,temporarily staying away from daily life.Traveling to a city or a country quite different from dwelling one may help people get a fresh sight to view the world and themselves.Boasting a long history and rich humanistic heritage,Europe has always been a popular destination for some refreshment.Croatia,a seaside little country,turns out to be a good choice.This translation practice report is based on the booklet-Croatia in the Heart of Europe:Mediterranean and Central European Cultural Landscapes of Croatia.The translator selected the preface,introduction and excerpts of chapter three as the source texts for this practice,namely,the introduction of the main content of this book,all co-authors of this book,and all kinds of records in written forms in Croatia.All three parts can help readers get a brief yet comprehensive understanding of Croatia before their visit.This essay mainly discusses the E-C translation of tourism text based on the translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark.Accordingly,the tourism text belongs to some kind of comprehensive text mixed with informative,vocative and expressive functions.Thus communicative translation and semantic translation manners can be flexibly applied in handling source texts with those features mentioned above.To be specific,in this translation practice,it is advisable for the translator to adopt semantic translation as the basis in thoroughly comprehending source texts,including information and emotions contained in them,namely loyal to the author and source texts at first place;and then to apply various communicative translation strategies and methods,including adaptation,reconstruction,subtraction,addition,amplification,omission,structural rearrangement etc.,in translation to convey nearly all information and emotions shown or hidden in source texts in a way suiting to the communicative customs in target context,namely loyal to target language;and last to attend to readership in terms of culture bound words or expressions,by employing some feasible manners,paraphrase,transliteration and annotation for instance,to tackle cultural-loaded information.In this way,target texts might become more accessible,readily acceptable yet remaining to be exotically attractive to some extent for readers,who would be encouraged to explore further or even take actions,namely paying a visit to Croatia.Thus this translation practice might help to examine the semantic and communicative translation theory while enhancing the capability of the translator in dealing with those texts.As an initial attempt in translating tourism texts,it is hoped that it will be of some assistance for future reference. |
