A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Informative Texts From The Perspective Of The Communicative Translation

With the rapid development of information and communications technology,the progress of artificial intelligence robots has induced a series of social problems in the fields of law,ethics,gender and economics.To understand the latest trend in foreign science and technology,the translation of Information and Communications Technology(ICT)text has attracted increasing attention.The selected material is a scientific paper named Symbiosis with Artificial Intelligence via the Prism of Law,Robots,and Society,published in the Journal Artificial Intelligence and Law.This text has the following linguistic features:(i)containing extensive terms,proper nouns and abbreviations;(ii)using complicated and passive sentences,as well as nominalized structures;(iii)featuring logical and coherent.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology,the translation material belongs to informative text,which should be translated under communicative translation strategy,centering on readership,focusing on message transmission,and producing on its readers the same effect as was obtained on the readership of the original.Therefore,under the guidance of communicative translation strategy,the translator explores the key problems encountered in this translation practice by case analysis to complete a better translation version.In translation practice,the translator adopts transliteration,zero translation,literal translation and free translation at the lexical level,which retains the characteristics of professionalism and preciseness of English for Science and Technology(EST)texts.At the syntactic level,English focuses on hypotaxis and Chinese on parataxis.There are significant differences in the sentence structure between these two languages.The translator adopts the methods of conversion,division and omission translation to accurately convey the original information.At the textual level,addition and repetition methods are used to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the text,removing the reading obstacles for the target readers.Through this translation practice,the translator has deepened understanding of the field of AI robots,improved translation skills,and provided some references for scholars in related fields.
