The text of this translation practice report is selected from On Thin Ice: UK Defence in the Arctic(Chapter 1-4),which mainly introduces the geography, politics and military situation in the Arctic. The original text focuses on conveying information and expressing reasons, and the characteristics of informative text are more prominent. In the original text, long sentences are often used to enhance the compactness and relevance of information, but they bring some difficulties to translation.Communicative translation has a strong pertinence to the translation of long sentences in informative texts, which can enhance the effectiveness of information transmission and the understandability of the translation. In view of this, based on the informative features of the original text, this practice report summarizes three strategies for translating long sentences from the perspective of communicative translation: addition, division and synthesis. In the analysis, the author finds that the information in long sentences can be expressed accurately and hierarchically by adding and translating subjects and conjunctives, the clauses can be made more concise and understandable by dividing and translating, which is in line with the language habits of the target readers, and the readability of the translation can be enhanced by synthesis,so as to realize communication more smoothly.
