A Report Of Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Of 2018 Tencent Cloud+Future Summit (Excerpts)

With the rapid development of technology,areas like cloud computing and big data have received widespread attention from the pubic.Since 2015,Tencent Cloud Plus Future Summit has attracted many participants every year.As an influential event,it provides a lot of guidance for the practitioners in cloud computing and other sectors.The summit themed “The Start of Intelligent Future” is partly chosen as the material of a simulated Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting.And the practice report is also based on it.The main part of the material selected of this report is a panel discussion.The speakers all deliver impromptu speeches without drafts.Their highly interactive speeches are featured by different speaking styles and the speed at which they communicate with each other varies.The characteristics of impromptu speeches,such as redundant expression,information repetition,miscellaneous sentence patterns and so on,are extremely distinct.In addition,the topic of this summit involves cloud computing,big data,vehicle networking and other fields with strong professionalism,which challenges the interpreter.In order to face these challenges,the interpreter of this simulated task has made adequate preparations before interpreting through referring to the videos of previous summits for deepening the understanding of relevant topics,learning the speaking styles of several speakers,and establishing a glossary.Moreover,the interpreting practice is mainly guided by the Interpretive Theory.The report details the reformulation strategies on lexical,syntactic and discourse level.And more practical strategies adopted are,for example,simplification and logical manifestation,which help a lot.Finally,after completing this simulated task,some reflections are made and some suggestions are put forward to better cope with similar tasks in the futurepractices.For instance,techniques of interpreting should be used in a more flexible way.
