Simultaneous interpretation is a kind of inter-lingual transformation,which is strictly limited by time and is of great difficulty.It even requires the interpreters to convey the information in target language without hearing a complete sentence.There are huge differences between Chinese and English,which bring great challenges to the Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation,so some strategies should be adopted to deal with it.Reformulation strategy is the tactic that interpreters would use,consciously or unconsciously,to ensure effective and smooth output of interpretation.Guided by the interpretive theory,this thesis attempts to explore through the experiment the difficulties encountered by student interpreters in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation,the reformulation strategies used to deal with related difficulties,the strategies of most and least use and the reasons behind.The author invited four postgraduate students majoring in English interpretation from Nanchang University to participate in the experiment.Through retrospective interviews and analysis of the transcripts,it was found that the difficulties faced by student interpreters mainly focused on redundant expressions,dense information,post-position of predicates,absence of subject and loose sentence structures.The author selected representative sentences from the experimental materials and analyze the application of reformulation strategies such as omission,generalization,anticipation,conversion of parts of speech and voice,and explicitation of logic.Then the author calculated the usage rate of the above reformulation strategies of student interpreters.Through the experiment,the author finds that student interpreters often use some reformulation strategies,such as omission,anticipation,and conversion of parts of speech,while they rarely or never use the strategies of generalization,explicitation of logic,and conversion of voice.The latter three strategies have high requirements for the overall quality of interpreters,thus student interpreters finding it difficult to apply these strategies flexibly after a short period of learning and training. |
