| With the rising of China’s international status and the deepening of cultural interaction between China and other countries, many Chinese books have been translated into English, and the translation of educational books has become a common business type in translation circles. The translation quality of the text will directly influence people’s educational concepts, and then influence people’s parenting behaviors, parenting methods, or even parenting concepts. This is a Chinese-English translation project report, and its source text is the book Cultivate Children’s Self-Control-Let Them Manage Themselves written by Fu Xiaoping, PhD, Fudan University and a renowned education expert in parenting. The translator is responsible for the translation of the first chapter. There are 18832 Chinese characters in this project, and the translator completes it independently. This translation report is to explore the application of Reiss’s text analysis theory and Nida’s functional equivalence in translating parenting books, and discuss the translation strategy and translation method that aim at parenting books under these translation theories, with references for translation in this field. Meanwhile, this translation report is also conducive to promoting Chinese parenting culture and national soft power in culture.By analyzing the content and language of the source text, the translator did some research in how to do well in pre-translational preparation and the research of parallel text when translating educational books. Under the guidance of Reiss’s text analysis theory and Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the overall translation practice employs correspondent translation methods to deal with all kinds of problems in the translation process. Moreover, when coping with long and complex sentences, the translator alternatively uses literal translation and free translation, disconnection and restructuring, in order to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation. After completing this translation project, the translator gets the following conclusion:(1) Reiss’s text analysis theory and Nida’s functional equivalence theory can be well employed in the translation of parenting books. (2) Considering the language differences between Chinese and English, the translator should adopt different translation methods when translating different sentences. (3) Parallel text is helpful to the translation project. Meanwhile, the author also gets some revelations, that is:(1) Before translating, the translator must be familiar with the genre, style and sentence structure of the translation material before conducting a translation. (2) When coming across proper nouns or new words of psychology, the translator should refer to dictionaries and literature to ensure the accuracy of translation. (3) Lots of translation practice and knowledge in every field are conducive to the overall improvement of the translator’s competence. |
