A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Battle For Paradise:Puerto Ricans Take On The Disaster Capitalists

With the development of economy and society in China,the relationship between China and other countries becomes closer and closer.As a result,paying attention to international situation and understanding international issues are important for development of China.In recent years,Puerto Rica,hit by hurricane Maria in 2017 is in the process of rebuilding and having some worldwide problems worthy of concern from all countries including China.This project report is based on the translation of The Battle for Paradise:Puerto Ricans Take on the Disaster Capitalists.The source text is a survey written by a Canadian journalist,Naomi Klein,and it was first issued in the news website The Intercept,and then was published.The source text is defined as an informative text,aiming to introduce the situation of Puerto Rica and inform readers.Under the leading theory,functional equivalence theory from Nida,this author utilizes various translation strategies and skills,trying to convey the information in source text and make the translation acceptable for Chinese readers.This report first introduces the background and characteristics of source text and briefly describes the translation process and leading theory.Then the report discusses the difficulties in translation and analyzes the causes.Difficulties fall into three categories:At lexical aspect,the Spanish words,Spanish terms and neologisms;at syntactic aspect,long sentences and complicate sentences;at discourse aspect,the cohesion problem.Next,the author discusses solutions to these difficulties:As for lexical difficulties,the author utilizes literal translation,free translation and annotation,trying to express the content in a complete and clear way;as for syntactic difficulties,the author uses the methods of division,shifting and amplification;as for discourse difficulties,the author uses many ways to realize grammatical cohesion and logical cohesion.In this part,the author lists some translation examples to illustrate.Finally,the author gives a summary for this project report,lists some insufficiency and comes up with some suggestions,hoping to be helpful for translation of informative texts and other translators.
