Vocabulary is the most basic element in composing a language,which is of vital importance in language expression and completing language system.To enlarge the vocabulary is the premise for middle school students to improve their ability in listening,speaking,reading and writing.Hence,vocabulary teaching is the priority among priorities in English teaching.However,at present,among Chinese middle school students,as the size of vocabulary is increasing,some students are facing difficulties in learning and memorizing vocabulary,mainly characterized by misspelling and wrong pronunciation of some words.Considering the importance of vocabulary learning for English learners and vocabulary learning problems exist in middle school students,an experimental study is conducted on Junior Grade One students in the Branch of Beijing No.4 Middle School in Huhhot.The purpose of the experiment is to apply Phonics teaching in English teaching to Junior Grade One students.This paper is composed on the basis of principles and definitions of phonics,learning transfer theory and input hypothesis combined with related spelling and pronunciation exercise.The application of phonics in Junior Grade One English teaching aims to help students to improve their pronunciation and spelling ability and inspire students learning interests in English vocabulary.In order to give the phonics teaching a full play,and explore the positive affects on students vocabulary learning,this research seeks to prove that phonics teaching has a positive influence on students vocabulary learning.The participants of the research are from the Branch of Beijing No.4 Middle School in Huhhot.Class Five as the Experiment Class and Class Four as the Control Class are selected,and 91 students(45 in Class Five and 46 in Class Four)in total are involved in the experiment.The experiment began from September,2017 and ended in mid January,2018,in duration of 18 weeks.Vocabulary tests,questionnaires as well as experiments as research data resource are adopted.And SPSS 21 is used to analyze the results.The results of the experiment show that 1)Phonics teaching can improve students pronunciation and spelling ability.2)Phonics teaching helps to inspire students' vocabulary learning interest.On the basis of the findings of the research,the author came up with teaching suggestions: 1)using various methods to implement the Phonics teaching.2)using various activities and exercises to consolidate the Phonics teaching.The significance of this research is to deepen previous theoretical research on phonics teaching and provide teaching suggestions for further researches and studies in vocabulary teaching.
