Vocabulary learning is an important part of English study,so how to effectively achieve a long memory of words is a major problem that English learners should solve.At present,junior middle school students generally have great problem in doing that.The author tries to find an appropriate method for students to remember words based on established research and analysis,which is hoped that a method to help students learn words and lay a solid foundation for further learning of English.There is a method which is very popular in English speaking countries,namely phonics.It is an effective way of memorizing words by linking the pronunciation and spelling of words.Having been introduced into China more than ten years,phonics has gradually become the subject matter for many scholars,which has a great influence on the modern English education.It particularly plays an important part in English vocabulary teaching.Based on the established researches about phonological awareness and language transfer theory,this dissertation discusses the role of phonics in English vocabulary teaching in junior middle schools and how to apply it to junior middle school English vocabulary teaching.The purpose is to improve the students' reading and writing in learning words,stimulate their interest in English.This research mainly focuses on three questions: 1?Can phonics stimulate junior high students' interest in English? 2?Can phonics improve junior high students' reading in learning words? 3?Can phonics improve junior high students' writing in learning words?The experimental method is used in this study,with two classes respectively composed of 50 seven-year graders in Harbin,Heilongjiang province chosen as the subjects.Questionnaire and tests are used as research tools.In the experiment,the normal teaching method is used in the comparative class,while phonics is used in the experimental class.The experiment is conducted in three stages,the first of which is to test students' reading and writing ability before the experiment,which is to prepare for the formal experiment.The second stage is the study of phonics in the experimental class,which is to improve students' reading and writing.The third stage is the study of phonics after the experiment,which is to test whether this method stimulates students' interest in English,improve students' reading and writing ability in learning words.The experiment lasts three months.Finally,based on the analysis of data,research conclusions are drawn.Studies have shown that approximately 80 percent of students are interested in English,and more than 70 percent of students have mastered ways of learning words.Research conclusion: Phonics can improve the junior high students' reading,writing and develop their interest in learning words.It is highly suggested that teachers should use this method to teach vocabulary.
