| Phonics teaching method is often used by native English learners to learn vocabulary.It helps learners directly learn the pronunciation of 26 letters and letter combinations in words,establish the perception of letters,letter combinations and pronunciation and master the rules of spelling.The ability of spelling and reading can be seen as the bridge from English listening and speaking to reading and writing.This bridge can help students to reach the stage of reading and writing smoothly at a high speed.To explore the effect and ways of the application of the phonics teaching method in classroom vocabulary teaching of EFL learners,on the basis of existing research,this study uses comparative study,questionnaires,interviews and tests as research methods and it is supported by phonological awareness theory and learning transfer theory.The main subjects are the students of two classes in a junior high school in S city.Most of the students in the two classes are at the same age with the same English levels,come from the same primary school,use the same textbooks,and have similar learning environment.One class is chosen as the experimental class and the other the control class.In the experimental class,one lesson is allocated every week for phonics teaching to learn and consolidate the vocabulary learned in a certain unit,while in the control class,vocabulary is taught with IPA in the traditional way.Over the teaching of one semester,the subjects all actively participate in the research.English learning in junior high school is an important stage of students’ whole English learning career,so it is very necessary to use phonics teaching method in this stage to cultivate students’ spelling ability and reading ability.Based on this situation,the main questions discussed in this research are as follows:(1)How to apply phonics in junior high school English classroom vocabulary teaching?(2)To what extent can the application of phonics improve the English vocabulary learning efficiency of junior high school students?(3)To what extent can the application of phonics improve the interest and confidence of junior high school students in English learning?This study took all the students of the experimental class as the subjects of questionnaires and took few students as the subjects of interviews,aiming to examine the differences of students’ attitude,interest and confidence in vocabulary learning before and after learning phonics.All the students in the two classes were tested to detect the difference in English vocabulary learning efficiency before and after learning phonics.Firstly,this research explored a four-step classroom vocabulary teaching process based on phonics,aiming to gradually cultivate students’ phonological awareness,accumulate English vocabulary,and lay a foundation for complex vocabulary learning in the future.In the teaching process,this research focused on the usage of multi-sensory teaching methods,diverse teaching activities and a variety of exercises to achieve the three-dimensional teaching of phonics.It could not only help to maintain students’ interest in learning,but also help to internalize and apply the rules.Secondly,by analyzing the results of the tests before and after phonics teaching in two classes,it was found that phonics teaching method can greatly improve the efficiency of students’ vocabulary learning.The ability of reading and spelling of students in the experimental class was obviously better than that of the students in the control class.Compared with the pretest results of the experimental class,the number of high-score students of the post-test increased significantly,and the number of low-score students decreased correspondingly.Thirdly,through the analysis of the results from questionnaires and interviews before and after the research,it was found that phonics could effectively stimulate students’ interest and confidence in English vocabulary learning.Before learning phonics,most students didn’t have the correct way to memorize words,so they had to choose to memorize them by repeating.After learning phonics,most students had been able to spell unfamiliar words according to the spelling rules,and gradually began to use phonics to memorize the spelling of words and practice the pronunciation of words.In addition,phonics,as a vocabulary learning method,was universally fancied by students,and their learning interest had been greatly improved.Most students hoped that the teacher would guide them to continue to learn words in this way.In a word,phonics teaching method is a very important teaching mode in the teaching process of junior high school students.From the aspects of students,the use of phonics can not only effectively improve students’ reading ability and spelling ability,but also significantly cultivate students’ interest and self-confidence in learning English.From the aspects of teachers,using phonics in classroom vocabulary teaching can not only expand the existing methods of vocabulary teaching,but also provide methodological guidance for future teaching,thus to further improve the quality of classroom vocabulary teaching. |
