Pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar are the three elements of a language.Among them,vocabulary,as one of the three elements of language,is of self-evident importance.Therefore,more attention should be paid in vocabulary learning.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)has put forward higher requirements for vocabulary,which clearly stipulates that junior middle school students should learn to use 1500-1600 words and 200-300 idioms or fixed collocations.Students are also required to understand the meaning of pronunciation in language learning and spell words and phrases according to the pronunciation.Although the learning conditions of junior middle school students are diverse in different areas of China,there are ubiquitous problems for a considerable number of students,such as unfirmness of learners' vocabulary memory and lack of vocabulary learning methods.Hence,how to promote junior middle school students to learn English vocabulary more effectively is an urgent problem for middle school teachers and students to be solved.By reading the literature at home and abroad,the author finds that phonics is a very prevalent and effective method in English vocabulary teaching.Through studying the rules of pronunciation on 26 English letters and letter combinations in vocabulary,and establishing the relationship between letters,letter combinations and sounds,students are able to read out the word when they see it and once hearing the sounds,students can write down the corresponding word.Even though it has been approved by many people and applied in the domestic English training institutions,it has not actually been generalized to English classes of schools.In view of this,this study applies phonics into vocabulary teaching in Grade 7,analyzes and discusses whether the phonics can enhance the students' abilities in English word reading and spelling and whether it can stimulate the interest of junior middle school students in English vocabulary learning.Based on Learning Transfer Theory,Zone of Proximal Development and Information Processing Model,the author took Class 9 and Class 10 of Grade 7 of Kashi No.2 Middle School in Kashi Region as the research objects.Class 9 is the Experimental Class and Class 10 is the Control Class among them.The teacher adopted the phonics for the Experimental Class and used the traditional vocabulary teaching method for the Control Class.And the teaching experiment lasted for three months.Meanwhile,vocabulary test method,questionnaire method,and the structured interview were applied by the author in order to gather data.The research process of this thesis was divided into three stages: preparatory stage,implementary stage and summary stage.The preparatory stage includes the pre-test questionnaire and interview in the Experimental Class and the pre-tests of word reading and spelling for the Experimental Class and the Control Class.Its purpose is to prepare for the formal research;In the implementary stage,the Experimental Class was taught the phonics and the Control Class was adopted the traditional vocabulary teaching method.The purpose is to find out whether phonics can improve the students' abilities of word reading and spelling in the Experimental Class;The third stage was implemented after the phonics teaching,including the post-questionnaire and interview of the Experimental Class and the post-tests of students' abilities on word reading and spelling in both classes.Statistical analysis was employed to test whether the students' abilities of word reading and spelling were improved and whether phonics could stimulate students' interest in learning English vocabulary.The results indicate that phonics enhances students' abilities in English word reading and spelling and promotes students' interest in learning English vocabulary.Finally,the author obtains three enlightenment from the phonics teaching.(1)Teachers should adopt diversified teaching methods to help students effectively memorize English vocabulary and improve their abilities of word reading and spelling;(2)Teachers ought to be adept in designing interesting teaching activities to stimulate students' interest in learning phonics and experience the fun of vocabulary learning;(3)Teachers need to arrange scientific exercises and reviews,so as to make students smoothly master the pronunciation rules of the phonics method and efficiently memorize the words.And aiming at the deficiencies of the thesis,the author also puts forward some suggestions for further research.
