Vocabulary plays a vital role in junior middle school English learning.Junior middle school students are exposed to more and more new English words when they start middle school. If students cannot decode and memorize them effectively, they will suffer a great burden of pressure. Therefore, the teacher must discover an appropriate approach to pronunciation and spelling instruction. This thesis studied the relationship between the sounds and spelling rules to explore a suitable phonics teaching method for junior middle school students based on their physical and mental characteristics to enhance their English learning interest. This study investigated phonics instructions’ impacts in terms of three dimensions:phonological awareness, phonics reading, and word spelling.Three research questions are investigated as followed:1.How does phonics instruction affect phonological awareness among junior middle school students?2.How does phonics instruction affect junior middle school students’ phonics reading ability?3.How does phonics instruction affect junior middle school students’ word spelling ability? This study has conducted a 13-week teaching experiment. Two parallel classes composed of 78 junior high school students in Grade 9 from Shanghai were chosen.Class Five(n=38)was taught by phonics instruction as the experimental group(EG),while Class Three(n=40)was taught by traditional phonetic teaching as the control group(CG).The two groups’ phonics reading and word spelling abilities were tested and comparatively analyzed through pretest and posttest during the research process. All collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 27.0 software.Research shows significant differences between the two teaching methods at the end of the three-month instruction. The students who come from EG have a more solid grasp of phonics reading and word spelling after receiving the phonics program. Moreover,it is pleasant to see the students even overcome the fear of difficulty seeing polysyllabic words.Based on these conclusions, this thesis puts forward some practical implications and suggestions, hoping to explore a teaching method that is more suitable for junior high school students.
