This is a translation report based on Peter Newmark's work About Translation.The book is a collection of Peter Newmark's theses on translation theories.The editor has picked 13 pieces from Peter Newmark's 30 theses published between 1982 and 1990,for a total of 13 chapters.Therefore,each chapter in this book is independent and has no logical relations with the others.For this report,Chapter 5 of The Use of Systemic Linguistics in Translation has been chosen as the source text.This chapter addresses Michael Halliday's systemic functional linguistics,including the theory 's foundation,practice process and development,in addition to the cohesive issue of translation,social translation and cultural translation.This report consists of four main parts.Part one focuses on task description,i.e.project background,introduction of Peter Newmark and the source text;Part two is process description,in which preparation,text analysis and proofreading are involved.Part three is the most significant section of this report.It is the section in which the author discusses the translation in view of lexical,syntactic and contextual perspectives,and the use of multiple theories and strategies to solve any difficulties and problems encountered during translation.Part four recounts the author's experience and achievements,culminating in a conclusion.Under the guidance of Complete Translation,translation methods and techniques such as class-shift,addition,negation,grammatical order and clause transformation are discussed with reference to the author mission of retaining the source text's utility and value in linguistic form,connotative meaning and pragmatic value,and the hope of providing guidance and reference for future translators.
