A Report On The E-C Re-translation Of The BHS Complete Training Manual For Stage 1

Modern equestrian sport gets its root in Europe and has gradually evolved into an worldwide cultural and competitive activity.In developed countries as England,the United States,German,Japan and developed regions like China’s two special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macao,a wholly industrial chain of the equestrian sport has been formed up and consequently brought about generous benefits for the local economy and society.While in Chinese mainland,the equestrian sport still remains at the primary and unbalanced level.China lags far behind in the equestrian training and certificate system for different riding or coaching levels.In essence,China doesn’t have enough equestrian talents to support the future development of equestrianism.Confronting with such a serious situation,it gives an urgent need to learn the integral system of talents training and testing from those leading countries and introduce some high-leveled textbooks about equestrian training to get out of the dilemma of equestrian teaching faced by China.Based on the previous research,the author finds that CHIA(China Horse Industry Association),working together with EIRC(Equuleus International Riding Club),has translated three serial training textbooks from BHS(British Horse Society)to use for guiding domestic equestrian training practices in 2017.Then the author has perused the first of serial books THE BHE COMPLETE TRAINING MANUAL For Stage1 and contrasted it with its existing Chinese version“马术综合培训教程第一阶段”.According to the comparison,there is a lot of translation defectiveness in the existing version like word-for-word translation,high conformity to the source text,lacking readability,etc.Due to the worldwide recognition of the BHS serial textbooks and various defectiveness existed in the Chinese version,the author decides to re-translate THE BHE COMPLETE TRAINING MANUAL For Stage1 and writes a report based on the re-translation practice.The report can be mainly divided into two parts: the analysis of the self-translation practice and the comparative analysis of the self translated text and the existing version.In the report,the author,under the guidance of Functionalist Translation Theory,is going to analyse the textual and linguistic features of the source text to gain a clear understanding of its translation requirements or purposes,contrast the self translated text with the source text in terms of lexical,syntactic and discourse levels to discuss translation principles and skills applied in translating operative and informative texts and contrast the self-translated text with the existing translated text in terms of lexical,syntactic and discourse levels to discuss translators’ role and orientations in the process of translation.After re-translating the source text,the author can not only provide a better Chinese version with high quality and more suitable to target readers,but also verify that Functionalist Translation Theory can be worked as an suitable theory on instructing operative and informative texts translation and version comparison.Moreover,the author comes to realize that gaps in translation skills and theoretical knowledge still limit the author’s translation performance.And the author needs to work hard to increase the translation capability.
