[Objective]To evaluate the effect of teach-back method in health education of patients with severe chronic periodontitis, which provided a reference for formulating effective health education strategy in patients with severe chronic periodontitis.[Methods]A total of 70 patients with severe chronic periodontitis meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected as the study objects and randomly divided into the intervention group and the control group, with 35 patients in each group. The intervention group received health education based on teach-back method, while the control group received routine health education guidance. The Self-Efficacy Scale for Self-care(SESS),Dental Anxiety Scale(DAS),and Oral Health Impact Profile(OHIP-14)were respectively used before and after the intervention to evaluate the self-efficacy for oral care, the dental anxiety, and the quality of life. And before and after the intervention, the probing depth(PD),bleeding on probing rate(BOPR)and plaque control rate(PCR)were recorded too.Data analysis was performed with IBM SPSS 22.0 software package, independent sample t test and paired t test were used to compare the differences between groups and within groups for the measurement data,chi-square test was used to compare the differences between groups for the counting data and P<0.05 was set as statistically significant.[Results]1.Baseline information:A total of 63 patients with severe chronic periodontitis completed this study, including 33 patients in the intervention group and 30 patients in the control group. There was no difference in basic information between the two groups(P>0.05),and the two groups were comparable.2.Self-efficacy for oral care:After the intervention, the total score of SESS and score of self-efficacy for dentist consultation,self-efficacy for brushing of the teeth, and self-efficacy for dietary habits of the two groups increased compared with that before the intervention, and the total score of SESS and the three dimensions score of SESS of the intervention group were significantly higher than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.001).3.Dental anxiety:(1)After the intervention, the results of intra-group comparison showed that the DAS score of both groups was lower than that before the intervention, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The comparison results between groups showed that the DAS score of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(t=-3.394,P=0.001).(2)After the intervention, there were 2patients(6.06%)in the intervention group and 10 patients(33.33%)in the control group with dental anxiety. The patients with dental anxiety in the control group were significantly more than those in the intervention group, and the difference was statistically significant(?~2=7.580,P=0.006).4.Quality of life:After the intervention, the results of intra-group comparison showed that OHIP-14 score in both groups was lower than that before intervention, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).Intergroup comparison results showed that OHIP-14 score of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(t=5.665,P<0.001).5.Periodontal clinical indicators:(1)After the intervention,PD in both groups improved compared with that before the intervention, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001),the intergroup comparison results showed that PD in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(t=-3.389,P=0.001).(2)After the intervention, the bleeding on probing in both groups improved and BOPR significantly decreased, with statistically significant differences(P<0.001).The intergroup comparison results showed that the BOPR decreased significantly in the intervention group compared with the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(t=-14.779,P<0.001).(3)After the intervention, the proportion of dental plaque in both groups decreased compared with that before the intervention, and the PCR significantly decreased, with statistically significant differences(P<0.001).The intergroup comparison results showed that the PCR in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(t=-3.125,P=0.003).[Conclusions]1.Health education based on teach-back method can significantly improve the self-efficacy for oral care of patients with severe chronic periodontitis.2.Application of teach-back method on health education can reduce the dental anxiety in patients with severe chronic periodontitis.3.Health education based on teach-back method can improve the quality of life of patients with severe periodontitis.4.Application of teach-back method on health education can promote the oral health in patients with severe chronic periodontitis.
