Objective: Investigating the cognition and attitude of hospice care among nursing students in Jiangxi province and studying the influence of schools, grades, family background on nursing students' cognition and attitude about hospice care.Knowing their intentions for hospice work and expectations for hospice care related courses.Analyzing the problems of hospice care and death education in the current medical nursing education, and providing a basis for the provision of hospice-related courses in the medical and nursing majors of universities in Jiangxi Province. Methods: This study was a non-experimental,descriptive study.A literature review and questionnaire survey were used in the study. In the first stage, the literature review was adopted to study the development status relating to hospice by using electronic resource databases such as CNKI.In the second stage,a questionnaire survey method was used to design the questionnaire.A Convenience sampling method was used to investigate 1052 nursing students from 5 universities in Jiangxi province. The recovered data was established with Epidata 3.1 and imported into SPSS17.0 for statistical data analysis. The counting data were described by relative number and absolute number,T test, variance analysis and chi-square test were used for single factor analysisand, the chi-square test and non-parametric test were used to compare the cognition and attitude of students from different grades, different birthplaces, and different family backgrounds to hospice care and their evaluation of the current situation of hospice care, etc.P < 0.05 indicated statistical significance.Results:(1)More than 78% of the students surveyed have learned about hospice-related content. The source of knowledge is given priority to network television and other media(47.5%),followed by the acquisition in the classroom(29.7%).It should have related content in courses such as basic nursing and geriatric nursing.A small number of students' knowledge of hospice care comes from extracurricular books(19.7%),and hospice care knowledge comes from family education of the students is less(3.1%).(2)In terms of the cognition of the physiological and psychological conditions of the dying patients, the accuracy rate of the answer of the senior students was higher than that of the junior students(P < 0.05).The accuracy rate of undergraduates was higher than that of junior college students(P < 0.05).(3)In terms of hospice care experience,78% of the students have heard of hospice care related services, and 31% of the students have experience of accompanying their loved ones on their deathbed;Only 32% of the students have ever seen hospice patients or medical staff for hospice care, and 5% of them had ever been involved in hospice care.(4)Regarding the attitude towards hospice care,69% of the students are willing to join the hospice volunteer association,64% are willing to serve the dying patients,63% of the students who are willing to serve the dying patients think that serving the dying patients is more valuable than serving the general patients, and 23% of the students think that the dying patients need them more than the general patients.Among the students who are reluctant to serve the dying,60% of students said they were afraid of dying and did not like the sad atmosphere of dying service. When thinking of dying,68 percent of the students had feelings of fear, avoidance, tension and anxiety.(5)89% of the students wanted their loved ones to receive hospice care when they were dying, and 57% of the students wanted to receive hospice care when they were dying. However,in the hospice employment intention category, only 2.8% of students thought they would engage in related work,41% thought they might,and44% did not.(6)Students have a high support rate for the provision of hospice-related courses and high expectations for the courses.80% of students think it is necessary or very(highly)necessary to offer courses related to hospice care or death education.Among the students who think it necessary to open(offer)a palliative care courses, there are more undergraduate students than college students.74% of students think that it is necessary to arrange apprenticeships and internships after the hospice-related courses are set up.The students' school attendance, grade, gender, and the publicity of death at home are the major factors that influence the provision of hospice-relatedcourses.Conclusion:(1)At present, nursing students in Jiangxi Province are still at the level of cognition of hospice care, and the level of hospice care is not deep enough. The education of hospice-related knowledge in the university where they are located has not formed a systematic model. As the future main force of hospice care, they need deep learning and understanding of hospice knowledge and hospice care work.(2)The topics related to death and dying are still not discussed in most families. And the taboo attitude of the family towards end-of-life or death leads to the lack of another important educational channel for end-of-life care.(3)Most nursing students are willing to accept hospice care for themselves or their families at the end of their lives. However, few nurses who are the source of hospice development are willing to be hospice caregivers because of the fear of Dying and Death.(4)Nursing students have high expectations of offering hospice-related courses, and they hope that there will be practical links in the course setting.Courses related to hospice care and death education should be offered as soon as possible. As for the specific curriculum, the members of the research group need to study further.(5)Nursing students do not have enough in-depth understanding of the real meaning of hospice care or death education and do not think about the role they play as nurses. In the future, medical colleges and teaching hospitals should not only pay attention to the education of professional knowledge but also infiltrate humanistic consciousness into the whole process of education to meet their real needs for hospice care.
