Objectives 1.To understand nursing teachers and students' attitudes to palliative care.2.To explore the factors that influence the attitude of palliative care of nursing teachers and students,and provide strategies for or the school and clinical education of palliative nursing.MethodsThis study adopted the qualitative phenomenological research methods,and purposive sampling method.Several nursing teachers and students in two universities and some nursing professional teachers in two Three-level A-rate hospitals were selected to conduct a semi structural in-depth interview.The sample size was based on the saturation of the interview data.Before the interview,the informed consent,interview outline and self-examination forms were worked out.After obtaining the understanding and consent of the interviewees,the interview focused on the experience of palliative care,and the whole course was double recorded.The NVivo software version 10 was used as the auxiliary software,and the data were analyzed with the Colaizzi analysis method.Results 1.This study included 16 nursing students in two colleges with different educational backgrounds(junior college,undergraduate,postgraduate),different gender and practical hospitals.They were 4 men and 12 women;aged at 21~28,with an average age of 23;4 college students,9 undergraduates,3 master postgraduates;2 married,14 unmarried.The sample of college teachers contained a teacher in Geriatric Nursing Science,one in Medical Nursing,one in Basic Nursing and one in Emergency Care from two universities.Six hospital teachers were selected from different departments of two Three-level A-rate hospitals.They were in internal medicine,surgery,oncology,ICU and special ICU.Among them,there were 2 men and 8 women;aged at 26~48,with an average age of 33;2 college education,3 undergraduates,5 Master's degrees;3 primary nurses and 2 teaching assistants,1 tutor,1 lecturer,1 co-chief superintendent nurse,1 vice professor,1chief superintendent nurse;4 unmarried,6 married.2.The nursing teachers' attitude of palliative care experience can be summarized as palliative care cognitive(symptoms nursing,psychological comfort,spirit ballast,soul fate),palliative care experience(sympathy,frustration,sadness,fatigue),palliative care education(philosophy,humanities,cooperation,teachers,methods),palliative care outlook(difficulties and development)etc.4 themes,15 sub-themes in all.3.There are 4 themes and 19 sub-themes for palliative care attitude of nursing students: Negative emotions in palliative care practice(A sense of weakness,frustration,fatigue,conflict,fear,contradiction.)?Positive emotion in palliative nursing practice(A sense of accomplishment,sympathy,appreciation,regret,and judgment.)Reflection on the teaching of palliative nursing in school(shortcomings in theoretical teaching,poor practice teaching effect and poor probation effect.)?Palliative nursing concept(Dignity,death cognition,responsibility,health and transposition thinking)Conclusions 1.The nursing teachers and students interviewed had negative emotional experience in palliative nursing practice.Compared with nursing teachers,students had more emotional experience and emotions.2.The knowledge of palliative care of nursing teachers and students were lacking.Nursing teachers could explain the basic theory and related knowledge of palliative care,while nursing students could only express their feelings and thoughts around the concept of palliative care.3.The full-time nursing teachers in the school had a good grasp of palliative nursing knowledge,and the clinical teaching teachers had rich experience in palliative nursing practice.4.The nursing teachers interviewed have rich imagination on carrying out palliative nursing education;nursing students will reflect on school teaching after palliative nursing clinical practice.
