Purpose By analyzing the clinical and pathological feature of double primary cancers(Breast Cancer-Lung Cancer),this study was aimed to investigate the relationship between these two primary cancers,to live up to early detection, early treatment of patients and to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with these two primary cancers. Methods Retrospective analyses were performed on patients diagnosed as double primary cancers by pathological evidence in The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from Jan.2008 to Dec.2008.The clinical and pathological feature of double primary cancer(Breast Cancer-Lung Cancer)and the status of EGFR mutations of the second primary lung cancer was analyzed.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0 version statistical software. The standardized incidence rate of second primary lung cancer in breast cancer patients was calculated by dividing the number of observed patients by the expected number of cases in Chinese general population. All data was presented in the form of median or meanąSD.Chi-squared test and t test were performed on analyses of categorical variables and groups respectively.Fisher's test was performed when a theoretical number T<1 or n<40,and logistic regression model was employed to assess the possible factors of double primary cancers.P<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results 55(0.7%)of the 8048 patients were diagnosed with the second primary lung cancer. All patients are women. The incidence rate of primary lung cancer(SIR=1.4[95%CI: 1.25-1.55])was higher than that of the general female population. The median age of patients with double primary cancers was 60,and the median interval time was 35ą13.0 months. Most of them feature low-grade breast cancers, such as: older age,ER-negative,low Ki67,and no lymph node metastasis.Patients with the second primary lung cancer have a significantly higher rate of EGFR mutations(78.6%)than that of people with the adenocarcinoma of lung alone.55 patients were diagnosed primary cancers(Breast Cancer-Lung Cancer)accounted for approximately 13.6% of the pulmonary ground-glass opacity(GGO)detected. Conclusion Breast cancer patients, especially those with low-grade malignancy, are at high risks of developing the primary lung cancer.EGFR may play an important role in primary lung cancer and breast cancer.Furthermore,For breast cancer patients with isolated ground-glass opacity, clinicians should closely follow up.
