Objective:The aims of this study were to use tonifying spleen,regulating qi and resolving phlegm as treatment principles,prescribe chronic gastritis patients who meet the criteria with Xiangshaliujunzi decoction to compare the symptom change before and after treatment,and to provide reference for clinical application.Methods:There are two parts in this study,theoretical study and clinical study.Theoretical study reviewed the development of diagnosis and treatment of chronic gastritis(CG)in western medicine,and summarized the scope of CG in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),etiology and pathogenesis,syndrome differentiation and treatment in TCM.Clinical study was conducted in Toronto,Canada.All subjects are collected in IE Acupuncture and TCM Clinic and Yongkang Health Center.It was designed according to the clinical trial criteria.The criteria are that CG patients were assessed by TCM syndrome differentiation to have spleen deficiency and phlegm-dampness symptoms.A total of 30 patients who meet the criteria were prescribed with Xiangshaliujunzi decoction powder for 2 courses to finish the study.Each course is 1 month.Patients need to take the powder orally 4 grams each time,and 3 times per day for 2 months.Symptoms were evaluated and compared before treatment and after 2,4,6,8 weeks of the initiating treatment.The results were analyzed using statistical software.Results:The overall effectiveness of symptoms improvement is 90%,of which the cure rate is 6.67%,the obvious effectiveness rate is 30%,and the effectiveness rate is 53.33%.After 2 weeks of the initiating treatment,the individual symptom score decreased except loose stools,shortness of breath and no desire to talk.After 4 weeks of the initiating treatment,the individual symptom score decreased except loose stools,of which the scores of a preference for warmth and pressure,a reduced food intake,lassitude,shortness of breath and no desire to talk are significantly decreased.After 6 and 8 weeks of the initiating treatment,all individual scores are significantly decreased.A probability of P<0.01 is considered statistically significant.Conclusion:1.The study shows that using tonifying spleen,regulating qi and resolving phlegm as treatment principles can improve clinical symptoms of CG patients.The total effectiveness rate of improving the overall symptoms is 90%.2.After 8 weeks of the initiating treatment,all individual scores are significantly decreased(P<0.01).The symptoms change before and after treatment is statistically significant,of which the symptom of stomach distention,dull gastric pain,a preference for warmth and pressure,a reduced food intake,lassitude,shortness of breath and no desire to talk are significantly improved.3.There is no statistical difference of clinical effectiveness between Chinese patients and non-Chinese patients.It is means that Xiangshaliujunzi decoction can be used to treat Chinese and non-Chinese CG patients.
