The western coastal areas of Myanmar have a long history of human civilization, economic and trade, among which the Rakhine region, where the ancient Arakan Dynasty was located, was the hub of land and sea links, playing a key role in the economic, trade and religious and cultural exchanges between India and Southeast Asia.Mrauk-U,the capital of the old Arakan Dynasty, once became a maritime military power, economic and religious center in the Bay of Bengal region. However, scholars at home and abroad mostly focus on countries such as Myanmar,Thailand,Cambodia, and so on.The study of the Arakan Dynasty in the border area between India and Myanmar is very scarce. The only relevant research also classifies its history into the history of Myanmar, ignoring the development of the Arakan Dynasty as an independent empire.Under the background of deepening the "One Belt and One Road" initiative, cultural exports and policies in Southeast Asia are becoming more and more important. Therefore,it is necessary and urgent to deepen the study of the urban areas in Southeast Asia. This paper hopes to set up a perfect framework for the historical evolution, urban spatial pattern and construction of the Arakan capital cities by sorting out the information about its history, economy and trade, politics, religion and culture, architectural art and urban spatial from information scattered in archaeological materials, inscriptions on tablets, chronicles and other documents.Summing up the regional uniqueness and value of the development of the capital cities of the Arakan Dynasty,it will help China better understand Southeast Asian culture and influence Southeast Asia.Firstly, the paper analyses the evolution of the history and spatial pattern of the capital of Arakan before the 15 th century, analyzing the influencing factors behind its spatial formation.Secondly, the three historical stages of the Mrauk-U period of the Arakan Dynasty from 1430 to 1784: the development period(1430-1531),the prosperity period(1531-1638),and the recession period(1638-1784)are interpreted from different perspectives, including political, economic, religious, cultural and military forces, and the religious thoughts behind the layout of Mrauk-U ancient city, the characteristics of its internal and external space and its influencing factors are analyzed. Finally,on the basis of a thorough understanding of the historical evolution of the Arakan Dynasty and the spatial changes of the capital, the regional uniqueness and value of the development of the capital are summarized, which will provide suggestions for the subsequent application of Mrauk-U for the world cultural heritage to determine the outstanding universal value and formulate the protection and development plan.
