Study On The Connecting Space Design In The Renovation And Extension Of Museum

This thesis concentrates on the connecting space between the old and the new in the renovation and extension of the museum.The issue in the renovation and expansion of the museum is a part of the system of protection and the reuse of the historic building.There is no doubt that connecting space is a concentrated expression of the contradiction between the old and the new,and it’s also a key to success.Although there are a growing number of renovation and expansion projects,little research related to it has been done.Based on plenty of examples,the thesis elaborates the relationship between the old and the new space and refines the design principles.And then the thesis attempts to research the design method of the connecting space and brings forward the practical strategies,which can give suggestion to similar projects in China.Full-text is divided into four parts.The first part is chapter 1,which explains the purpose and the significance of the research by studying the cause and historical development of the connecting space.Besides,this part also illustrates the object,scope,and methods.Then this chapter introduces the domestic and foreign research results and develops the thesis framework at the end of the chapter.The second part includes chapter 2 and chapter 3 that explain the design principles through the historical development and substantial expression of connecting space in western country and China.Chapter 2 focuses on the evolution of connecting space in order to explain the cause from the external factors and the perspective of ideology,while chapter 3 summarizes the design principles and the combination methods of the connecting space and the old and new museums.In addition,this chapter organizes the design points related to the connecting space that provides valuable guidance for the subsequent design research.The third part is chapter 4,that explores the design methods of the connecting space based on three modes.The three modes include spatial mode,functional composition,and formal aesthetics.This discussion is inferred from the in-depth analysis and summary of a large number of domestic and foreign examples.The fourth part is chapter 5,which summarizes the design strategies and future development trend of the connecting space between the old and new museums.It intends to provide enlightenment and reference for the renovation and extension of the museums in China.
