This thesis focuses on the modes of relationship between old and new public space in renovation and expansion of museum. The issue in renovation and expansion of museum is one part of the system of protection and reuse of historic building. At present, domestic academia pays close attention to protection and reuse of historic building, but less attention to renovation and expansion of museum, in which the relationship between old and new public space is almost empty. However, how to deal with the relationship between old and new public space is one of the most crucial problems. This thesis attempts to analyze in depth the relationship between old and new space, and make specific design strategies which can give suggestion to similar projects in China. The overall thread of thesis is to collect foreign cases in renovation and expansion of museum as many as possible, then to include design strategies of the modes of relationship between old and new public space in three aspects by analysis—combination modes, integration of visitor flow, scene organization. At last, theory guides practice. The last part of the thesis is to analyze the recent reconstruction and extension of two typical domestic cases by the forenamed design strategies.Full-text is divided into three parts. The first part is Chapter 1, 2 and 3, describing existing theories and examples which are the theory support and basis for the following study. The second part is corresponding chapter Four, which studies on the modes of relationship between old and new public space renovation and expansion of museum. There are three design strategies, concluding combination modes, integration of visitor flow, scene organization space. The study method is to analyze a large number of examples by induction, finally to gain specific design methods. The third part is Chapter Five which guides practice by theory. The two recent projects in renovation and expansion of museum in China are anlyze by the summing-up of the second part.
