Renovation and extension of museums is a branch of the topic of urban renewal and existing buildings reuse.This article tried to focus on interface creation in renovation and extension of museums to inquire into the challenge and key problems in renovation and extension of museums,re-examining the relationship of old and new,inside and outside,and architecture and city.As the most obvious and out elements of architecture design,interface has the function of enclosing the interior part of buildings,separating spaces,making a distinction between different using,guiding people ’s moving and expressing the buildings’ styles.It is the solid language of architecture spirit like history and culture.Via the analysis and study of a series of successful projects in renovation and extension of museums with different styles and backgrounds,this article concluded interfacial constructing’s particularity and importance in renovation and extension of museums,and summarized a series of te chniques of interfacial constructing and creating.This paper has six parts.The first part introduces the topic ’s background,content,purpose and significance simply,and summarized the trending and reference theory of the study in this field all over th e world.The second part introduces basic knowledge and concerning concepts of renovation and extension of museums from three aspects —the design of interface,the reuse of existing buildings and the development of museum architecture.The third part,analy sis the reasons and requirements of renovation and extension of museums,and individual samples in different types of backgrounds,concluding several basic lines we should follow in practice.The fourth part analysis all kinds of interfaces of museums in detail,and summarized the specific of interface design in context,space,function and material and the function in the unity of space,the complexity of different ages and the diversity of styles.The fifth part classified the methods of the interfacial constructing and creating in the renovation and extension of the museum architecture into space embodied style,volume juxtaposed style,forms compared style,and material combined style,and explained them in detail via individual projects.The last part concluded the main intention of this article,and predict the role and the prospect of interfacial constructing and creating could have in renovation and extension.I hope the discussion in this article could provide reference to the practice of renovation and extension of museums in our country,inspiring new ideas about the development of museum architecture.
