Differences in regional environment affect the development process and results of things. The rural settlement as the core of man-land relationship in rural areas, its development is not only affected by the regional environment, but also the reflection of human activities in material space. These two aspects together lead to the diversification of the history, change in distribution, spatial pattern and development level of rural settlements, and these differences influence and link each other. Therefore, the rural planning and construction which takes the optimization of the spatial pattern of rural settlements as the core, must co-ordinate the differences in various aspects, and develop targeted optimization strategies for the existing problems. This put forward higher requirements for our research on rural settlements. This paper chooses the Yaodi area on Han River with frequent historical evolutions in rural settlements and remarkable influence on human activities, and studies the historical evolution process, the characteristics of the present situation pattern and the difference in rural development of the rural settlements in this area.Sorting out the historical evolution process is the prerequisite for the optimization of rural settlements. This paper compares the site selection and distribution characteristics of rural settlements in the area before and after the construction of the Yaodi of Han River, and analyzes the influence of resettlement on the distribution of rural settlements in this area after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is concluded that the change of the natural environment led to the change in site selections of the rural settlements, and the intervention of human factors changed the distribution characteristics of rural settlements. In addition, based on the different development histories of rural settlements, according to the relationship of Yaodi Dike of Han River, the areas with different development histories of rural settlements in the Yaodi area are divided. The analysis of the characteristics in spatial pattern is the basis of rural settlement optimization. This paper systematically analyzes and compares the scale characteristics, shape features and distribution characteristics of the rural settlements in the Yaodi area and summarizes the characteristics and distribution difference of the spatial pattern of the rural settlements,by forming the distributed-area perspective under the historical difference and the whole-area perspective under the spatial grid division.Based on the clustering analysis of the indicators in the pattern characteristics, the spatial pattern of rural settlements in the Yaodi area is divided into 9 secondary categories of 4 main categories including strip type, clump type, clustering type and mixed type, and their contributing factors and characteristics are respectively summarized. The study of the differences in rural development is the key to rural settlement optimization. The difference in the characteristics of rural development determines the different directions in the spatial optimization of rural settlements. This paper, taking the village(administrative village)area as the research unit, through comparison of difference and clustering analysis of the development indicators in population, land, economy and society, divides the rural development into five types of characteristic categories.By analyzing the main problems and development directions of various types of villages, combining the characteristics of the spatial pattern of rural settlements, this paper puts forward the pertinent strategies of the spatial pattern optimization of rural settlements.
