Abstract/Summary:
Since universal design concept has been put forward,it has nearly fourty years of history.In recent years,it has even got universal identification of designers around the world.The goal contains improving disabled people’ s living condition and response for a series of social problems.The topic based on universal design,It takes the group of 6 ~14 years old children with mild mental retardation in school age as the research object and deeply learns about their daily life condition and behavior pattern.Comparing and analyzing existing assistive devices of mental retardation training,it puts forward a new direction to innovate and improve.The topic aims to apply universal design thought on mentally disabled people and exploration of assistive devices.Meanwhile,it proves universal design thought with the design of ability training by assistive devices and it changes the public’s stereotyped image towards assistive devices-----Not only the assistive devices exist because of disabled people’s demand,but it is a kind of daily necessities used by the group who has demand.The article through literature research,questionnaire survey,interview and observation,simulation and practice,and other methods.first illustrates the significance of cross amalgamation between uniersal design and assistive devices design.Afterwards,it makes preliminary analysis and understanding for the research group and discusses design feasibility and necessity of bringing universal design thought into assistive devices for the mentally retarded children.It stresses that design thinking of assistive devices contains four factors,including purpose of use,environment condition,economy traits and design principle.And it must follow principles of security,functionality,human factors,interestingness,growth,emotion and personalization.The conclusion is that to apply universal design thought into assistive devices design is feasible.Mentally retarded children and common healthy children have different appeals for the products.In the view of universal design thought and principle,it alleviates various life obstacles through design for the group of children with mild mental retardation which are caused by intelligence development problem.It can be implemented in three directions: the first is to enhance adaptability by assistive devices of ability training auxiliary;the second is to integrate existing assistant technology;the third is personalized customization of ability training system and to excavate the possibility in all directions that assistive devices can provide more services for mentally retarded children.
