With the wide range related to signage, signage in public spaces is a series of environmental information-provide devices which provide people with information about moving, acting and understanding in the building in a better way and proper position. It is now an important way to identify environmental spaces and convey information. In the building environment, signage system constructs a man-made environment with words, pictures, sound information, within which, light, color, material, pathway and so on all play an important role in this system and related ground or wall graphic, public arts, electronic information are all potential signage elements, all these together to fulfill people's needs in building use. With the social attention towards disabilities and promotion of universal design, we also need to consider the needs of more disabilities in signage design and universal design become more and more necessary. In a long time, the disabilities in our country face great difficulties in working and living, especially the persons with mental retardation. Impactful signage system helps them to join the society more independently and use the environment more freely. However, in the guidelines and design practice of signage, there's a long way to go to meet the users' needs. In this paper, on the basis of character of persons with mental retardation, their special needs towards signage environment are studied in order to create a signage environment suitable for more people, which expected to provide a beneficial exploration for universal design of environment. This thesis can be divided to six parts. The first part is the summarization. The second part is the relation between universal design of signage and persons with mental retardation. In the third part, the special needs of this group of person are studied on the basis of their characters. The design principles adapt to persons with mental retardation are put forward in the fourth part. In the fifth part, related design practices are analyzed and design methods of universal design of signage are studied. The sixth part is the conclusion and prospect of the thesis.
