Because of the Internet,on one hand,physical bookstores have been experiencing long-term pressure of inventory costing;on the other hand,they have been challenged by the low price of online bookstores and the availability of electric books.According to the research data retrieved from English language book market investigation conducted by Nelson,paper books was,however,starting to reboot in 2016,resulting a higher sales than electric books the first time in the past five years.At the same time,although there have been constant news about the failings of physical bookstores,there are always some proper managed,distinctive,and competitive stores maintaining outstandingly.This essay is starting off from The Third Space concept by Oldenburg,and intrigued by the idea of space system concept from Lefebvre and Soja.Through journal study,case analysis,and comparative analysis methods,the current development of physical bookstores are classified as four types based on the differences of target consumer groups,dimensions,business concepts,product selection,book display,and etc.The cases studied in this essay were chosen prudently by their featured representations,with a comprehensive collection of data and information from their official store websites and recorded founders' interviews.The author of this essay has also inspected the studied stores and analogous competitors,as a potential book consumer.From the views of people,space and activities,the author conducted a thorough analysis at targeted consumers,dimensions,business concepts,product selection and book display,respectively.Combined with the interactive relationships between construction space and behavioral psychology,the author was able to conclude successful experiences and detect existing problems after the field study and store development analysis.Potential solutions of operating problems at the stores are discussed carefully as a future reference for the evolution of physical bookstores.This essay is divided in six chapters.The first chapter is a brief introduction of research methods and threads used in this essay,based on the relative research initiatives,values and associated information.The second chapter presents and explains factors such as the concept of Third Space,store location and orientation,values and impacts.The third chapter,as the core of this essay,contributes a detailed presentation of four types of store operating modes.These four types are distinguished by their development features as in the following;traditional market sales,arts favored,mall combined,and featured experience marketing.The existing development problems are analyzed particularly in Chapter Four.At last,the author hopes that with building more enhancement of specialties in stores,creating connections of online and offline sales,focusing on small to medium business features,we can find better ways to optimize the performance of physical bookstores.
