As China expands its national power, global views of China are more complex than ever before. Many western countries wouldn't like to lose the opportunities for more cooperation with this emerging power,as well as any chances to crake down it.The complexities can be best observed on many western mainstream media.By studying public opinion about China in western news media,we could learn more authentic views related to China and their reporting styles and modes,of which we could make use of them and modify our foreign publicity so as to improve the image of China. The thesis mainly studies the news related to China from 2000 to 2005 in the New York Times, and exams total number of news reports, catalogue of each news report, news carrier, and news source and the intentions.Apart from China's own reasons, the thesis aims to describe all the influencing indicators, including cultural background, ideology, communication ideas and operating model. Therefore, the thesis suggests that we should objectively view public opinion about China in western news media and seek more inspirations from it.
