The study of the China-related reporting in the American mainstream media is of great significance to understand the views of the mainstream media and society towards China in the United States, to improve the international communication system of China, and eventually to build up the positive national image of China. Based on the existing related research, the research applies content analysis to analyze the essential characteristics of China-related reporting on New York Times which contain China and Chinese in their caption. By focusing on the propensity of China-related reporting, the research analyzes how New York Times presents China image from the perspective of hard power and soft power. According to findings, the research provides some suggestions on how to improve international communication system of China to build up positive national image of China.
