Since the reform and opening-up policy, China's economy has been booming at an alarming pace under the policy of peaceful rising, and we have created a"Chinese miracle"of keeping the economy soaring for over 3 decades, which reinforces our comprehensive national strength. Meanwhile, as a peace loving country, China has always been trying to build up an image of a large country that is"steady, developing, cooperative, and responsive"worldwide. But the result is unsatisfactory. At the same time, more and more international meetings and events being held in China has provided precious opportunities for us to reshape and enhance our national image.This paper is based on content-analysis, and samples the news report on China during Shanghai world expo by the New York Times. Under agenda setting and frame theory, the paper attempts to explore how the mainstream media like New York Times throughout the world present our national image. The result shows that such global medium events as EXPO have not played a positive role in improving our national image among worldwide mainstream media. On the whole, unfavorable news reports take a large share. The issues on human rights, environment and RMB exchange rate have been intensively attacked, which reflects the challenges ofpublic opinion worldwide we have to confrontafter our economy flourish.Through the analysis of negative news report by New York Times, the writer summarizes the shortcomings of our international communication and where we need improve so as to explore the approaches we can adopt to present the national image effectively through global medium events.
