With the flourishing of reality shows and continuous introduction of the copyright of foreign TV programme mode, “excessive entertainment” phenomenon is overflowing. The similarities among different programmes generate in audience a feeling of boring and aesthetic weariness. However, programmes with cultural elements such as “Competition of the Dictation of Chinese Characters”, “Heroes in the field of Chinese Characters” and “Excellent Chinese Poems” sprung up in 2013, which brought fresh air to the TV programmes and the audience as well. Nevertheless, compared with the high audience rating and the sensational effect in this industry, cultural programmes this year are dwarfed a lot. Under the current tide of entertainment,it is necessary to explore how programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition can survive the fierce competition and develop.This paper uses such main research methods as literature analysis, case study and questionnaire. Taking such programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition as “Competition of the Dictation of Chinese Characters”, “Heroes in the field of Chinese Characters” and “Excellent Chinese Poems” as cases, this paper analyzes and explores the content, ways of communication, responses from the audience and path to development concerning those TV programmes. This paper is composed of five sections. The introduction takes the educational function of TV media and the research status of programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition as a stating point. It elaborates the background and significance of the selected topic, and puts forward innovative and difficult aspects of this paper compared to others. Chapter one systematically analyzes the definition, classification,features and development status of programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition. Chapter two discusses programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition from such aspects as “programme positioning”, “surroundings of studio”, “host”,“guest” and “show plate”, and describes the communication process of those programmes.Chapter three conducts a statistical analysis of “responses from the audience” in respect of programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition on the basis of the questionnaire. Chapter four summarizes the current problems concerning programmes fallinginto the category of traditional cultural competition and by exploring the development path in the future, seeks to propose a practical option and measures with view to promoting the development of programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition. The creative aspects of this paper lie in the questionnaire directed at the audience of programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition and the statistical analysis of the psychology, habits and new media interaction of the audience, with a view to offering liable data to TV programme makers and producing more programmes falling into the category of traditional culture that can attract the attention of the audience.Although programmes falling into the category of traditional cultural competition are based on the traditional Chinese culture with a long history and rich content, it is imperative to reflect on how to tap the communicational potential of those cultural resources and inherit them to achieve the innovative development, and how to better interact with the audience and analyze their responses effectively.
