Analysis On Characteristics And Trends Of Data Journalism Based On Data Journalism Awards

With the general application of information technology,the big data has penetrated into many aspects of our daily life,and it's increasingly important of data mining.Big data has exerted a far-reaching impact on the news' production concept and pattern.At this background,it's meaningful to study the characteristics and trends of data journalism.From 2012 to 2016,Data Journalism Awards(DJA)has attracted news teams or individuals from more than 60 countries in the world for the competition,the works form 41 countries among them have been nominated.In a degree,these finalists are the best works of the data journalism around the world.In this thesis,347 finalists of the five times are the research object.By the content analysis method,these factors of the finalists will be gathered in statistics including the geographical distribution,producer,data sources,and news topics and visualization styles.Through horizontal and vertical comparison,this thesis will summarize the characteristics of shortlist works,analyze the reasons and forecast their trends,analyzing the typical works when it's necessary.In the study,it's found that the finalists have a variety of characteristics in different factors.For the geographical distribution,the developed countries contribute most,especially the United States and the Britain,others countries from around the world participate in different degrees.They have different producers;the traditional mediastill maintain their advantages in number.In the future,the cooperation across the fields will increase based on the study.The sources of data are diversified;and the government is the main data source,which is closely related to the fact that governments have published many public data at the background of Open Data Movement.Open data can promote the economic restructure,increase the governments' governance abilities and credibility to the public,and it will be a tendency that the governments will open more machine-readable databases.In the trends,the medias itself will built open data platform,and more sensing equipments will be used in data-collecting,which will greatly broaden the approaches of data sources.For the news topics,political,social and economic issues are the three main topics of the finalists.Among the works,the environment topic has an increasing trend;with the worse environment and increasing harms from it,the reporting about environment will be emphasized environment and will be further deepened.Meanwhile,at the background of globalization,the crimes across the countries are increasing;the combination of data annalysie and transnational news investigation will contribute more in attacking the crimes,especially the corruption across boundary.The visualization of the shortlists in the DJA has much to do with the dynamic interactive information charts,and the reader's interactive experience in different aspects and the news' s spreading will be further developed.
