Press Editing And Writing Ideas Introduced By Aomen Xinwenzhi (Macau News) And Its Impact

Being the first translated newspaper in modern China,Aomen Xinwenzhi(Macau News)came into being under the background that Commissioner Lin Zexu,who was sent to Guangdong to ban opium trade in March of 1839 by emperor Daoguang,required to know more information about foreign countries.Lacking of the original English newspapers of their translation as basis,the former researches did not research the text.Now,since its original newspapers had been discovered,this thesis will base on these newspapers to explore the western press editing and writing skills in the text.Afterwards,this thesis will also try to find out its impact on the development of Chinese newspapers.The thesis finds the subject matter of Aomen Xinwenzhi covers various fields with the using of pragmatics to analyses the text.Its content is different from the Peking Gazette.In the translated text,genre like information appeared.Leads and the main text in the upside-down paramedic writing style are almost same as how it is writing in nowadays.Sequential writing style is in the text as well.The writer of the news used a set of pragmatic strategy to diffuse.Means like explaining the source of the news information,numerating data and using reference to bring credibility,hiding views by using presupposition,fuzzy semantics for readable,using appropriate person deixis to take side and as well as combination of old and new information to express the facts to readers are all used in news writing.But the translators added,deleted and changed some news without permission when translating.Foreignisation strategy used in translation also might make the reader fell difficult when reading.These translation methods left remedies in the process of introducing western press writing skills.Finally,this thesis will comb the timeline of the development of Chinese newspaper and then find Lin's translation activity played an initial role of the later official translation activity.The Qing Government also run their newspapers,which unfortunately ended because of the officials' old attitude of translation of newspaper.Lin's activity also impacted on the folk newspapermen in Hong Kong like Wang Tao who had joined foreigners' newspaper office to start their own newspapers.In addition,reformers like Kang Youwei influenced by Lin's translation activity.The reformers carried over the tradition of translating foreign newspaper,which means translating foreign newspaper is one of the influence factors pushing early development of Chinese newspapers.
