The Study Of International Disaster News Coverage Of China

In the process of international communication,the shaping and communication of national image is more or less influenced by various factors.Among these factors,media plays the leading role in shaping and disseminating national image,especially in the era of mass communication.Some western countries with strong and solid economic foundation,advanced science and technology,and various communication channels,play an important part in shaping other countries' images around the world.Therefore,it is of great significance to study international news coverage of China.In terms of news,due to disasters are always sudden,unpredictable and destructive,news coverage of disasters often achieve great attention from nationwide,even worldwide.Different historical background,cultural values,political environment have led to the different characteristics of disaster news coverage between China and western countries.Based on the news coverage of China's disasters from 2014 to 2016,this paper explores how international media report China's disasters and domesticate under the framing theory.The purpose of this paper is to figure out the characteristics and features of international disaster news coverage of China.This paper summarized 36 different China's disasters during 2014-2016 by conducting study among the disaster news coverage of The New York Times and The Times in both qualitative and quantitative way and analyzed their reporting rules through several representative disasters.On the basis of framing analysis,this paper describes the main picture and focus of international disaster news coverage of China from several aspects including news numbers,news source,news subject,news attribution,news tone and domestication.This research concludes that international media tend to choose certain perspective and subject to construct China in the disaster news coverage of China,and media coverage of China's disasters vary greatly in the United States and the United Kingdom in terms of its focus and framework.International media rarely engage in the domestication of China's disaster news,and even if they domesticate the news,the degree is relatively weak.
