On The Construction Of China's National Image By The China Press

National image refers to the worldwide public's perception of and opinion about a given country's politics,economics,and people's livelihood.Simply put,it is the way a nation is viewed by foreign audiences.As for governments,public ideas or attitudes from other audiences upon one's country are quite essential.In addition,the influence of mass media upon national image cannot be ignored.The China Press,which established on January 5,1990,is one of the most influential and fastest growing Chinese daily newspapers in the United States.As the only daily newspaper published in simplified Chinese in U.S.,The China Press has playing a crucial role in America.“Two Sessions” are the annual meetings of the National People's Congress(NPC)and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference(CPPCC),the country's top political advisory body.It indicates and emphasizes China's politics,including Chinese most-concerned topics,suggesting China's next moves,standing for Chinese popular sentiments and awareness,and deserves domestic and overseas attention.The thesis is aimed at studying what Chinese national image that American Chinese-language media has established.In order to verify this hypothesis,this thesis studies news coverage by The China Press on NPC and CPPCC of 2016 from March1,2016 to March 17,2016.After analyzing contents of these news reports,the study shows that The China Press makes great efforts to building a “positive” national image for China.Generally,for political image,China plays a “major-country” role in international affairs.In addition,Chinese government adopts flexible ways toward its local government,and tries its best to fight with corruption.With regard to economic image,The China Press depicts a promising prospect for China's economy,albeit there are difficulties for Chinese government.What' more,the newspaper pays much attention to introducing and analyzing The Five-Year Plan and structural reform economic policies,which aims at emphasizing Chinese government's ambition and confidence in building China's economy.As to national image in people's livelihood,the Chinese-language newspaper presents a caring and responsive China for readers.In order to better illustrate this image,The China Press reports China during the Two Sessions in three aspects,which are environmental protection,poverty alleviation and universal two-child policy.Generally speaking,The China Press depicts a positive national image for China and shows great confidence in Chinese government.
