With the development of economic society and the promotion of women's social participation, women's employment in China has witnessed conspicuous increase, especially in the field of library where women employees compose the majority of the whole staff of librarians, according to statistics from different institutes of higher learning in China. From the perspective of social gender, however, the predominance of women does not guarantee the balance of professional development, which is to say, that women take up far lower proportions in higher positions in university libraries. In the field of human resource management, this is called "Gender Segregation".In light of the statistics from five institutes of higher learning in Fuzhou, the author of this thesis analyses the phenomenon of gender segregation in university librarians from the aspects of professional title structure, position structure age structure, educational structure, academic and research status and etc. on the basis of which, the further reasons are probed into, and correspondent policies for rectification are proposed to relieve the gender segregation of university librarians.The thesis is divided into five parts:The first part is introduced the background of the thesis, the purpose and significance of the research, current status of relevant research at home and abroad, the thoughts of this thesis and the main innovation herein.The second part is expounded the theory of career management and the theory of occupational gender segregation, on the basis of clarifying the related concepts, and is introduced the measuring approaches of occupational gender segregation.In the third part, the author illustrates gender segregation in libraries of institutes of higher learning in Fuzhou, with statistical analysis of the differences between male and female librarians in such aspects as professional title structure, position structure age structure, educational structure, academic and research status and etc. The influencing factors are further discussed after the prediction of the consequence of the phenomenon.In the fourth part, policies for rectification are proposed governmentally, socially and organizationally, to relieve gender segregation in university libraries in Fuzhou, which cover the following points:to achieve gender equality via public policy; to build up sound social supporting system to ensure a care-free life for women staffs in order that they will focus on work single-mindedly; to improve the management system to create equal opportunities for both male and female staffs.In the fifth part, conclusion is made.
