With the increasingly demand for the reliability and the quality of electric power supply, and the contruction of large power stations along with the formation of ultra-high voltage grid, intelligent power station and smart grid put forward higher requirement for better maintenance of the health status of power equipment. While the continuous progress of technology of computer, communication, sensors and signal processing give promotion to the development and application of the monitoring system of electric power equipment. With the purpose of being able to work straight twenty-four hours, the monitoring system of electric power equipment is required to be stable, reliable and real-time. Through the function and the performance requirements of the monitoring system of electric power equipment, this paper discusses and develops an universal platform of the system which is built upon Linux operaiting system.The paper firstly gives a general systematic introduction of the operating features and the requirements towards the performance of the operating system of electric power equipment, and an outline of the status of research and application of Linux, which has an advantage on the application of industrial real-time system compared with Windows, as well as an illustration on the significance and superiority of exploiting a monitoring system of electric power equipment on the basis of Linux.Next, the paper discusses the ways to select models from a host of Linux distributions and database systems and then to construct a development platform of the monitoring system that based on Linux, Mysql and QT graphical library, analyzes in detail the application architecture of the monitoring system of electric power equipment and the characteristics of each subsystem, designs a monitoring system of electric power equipments with platform versatility in virtue of software engineering and design pattern, combining the underlying technology of Linux system and QT GUI framework, and successfully develops a set of stable and reliable monitoring system of electric power equipment. The new system has a significant increase on both stability, real-time, security. With the Linux shell script automation technology to reduce the amount of maintenance of the system.Afterwards, through the test results from internal lab and HOMIS system of Gezhouba, the paper presents the application of the monitoring system of electric power equipment based on Linux. And in the end, a summary is given regarding related main research and development, and puts forward the problems that still remain to be solved.
