As the core of embedded control systems, embedded computer board’s functionality and performance determine the application of the system. With the continuous development of computer technology, the speed, processing capability of embedded computer board continuously improve, and the boards based on new and high-performance processor are in the market, but developers can not afford the high price. The functions of boards is the same important as performance, the veneer’s function is an important reference for developers to choose board. Although many boards provide some functions, most boards can’t meet the increasing need with the continuous development of the field of industrial control. Therefore, it becomes an important task to design a high-performance, multi-functional, cost-effective embedded computer board.In this thesis, a PowerPC-based industrial main control board for the characteristics of embedded computer board is designed, the board uses processor MPC8248 as the core, and it is compliant with CPCI specification. This thesis describes the process of designing hardware platforms and systems development in detail. Hardware design includes minimum system and external circuit design of MPC8247. In order to facilitate the development and debugging, there are JTAG/COP interface, serial port for debugging and so on. In order to meet the user’s functional requirements, we extend the communication interfaces as RS232, USB, Ethernet, while developing CPCI bus interface, SATA hard disk interface, JTAG interface for emulation and hot-plug management circuit to support hot plug. For system development, we select embedded Linux as operating system, analyze the cross-compiler, the downloading and boot process of the kernel. We also transplant U-boot, transplant and reduce the Linux kernel, make the root file system and the jffs2 file system for users.This industrial control board can facilitate engineers to build an automatic control system which is multifunctional, high performance and low cost. The board would have a good prospect as main control board for industrial applications.
