With the development of FPGA, system design enters the new era of SOPC(System On a Programmable Chip). Thence, implementing all digital designs on asingle chip has been realized.Using Xilinx FPGA platforms, this paper introduced how to design an integratedSOPC system. Firstly, in the 2nd chapter, this paper introduced SOPC designtechnology and the present situation of SOPC development all over the world, andthen introduced some types of microprocessors embedded into Xilinx FPGAs,including the structure of the CPU and CoreConnectTM Bus. The tools for SOPCdesign, including Xilinx EDK, ISE and DENX ELDK, are introduced in succession.This paper discussed the technique of SOPC system design in detail. IntroducedXilinx SOPC platform design flow, pictured the process of using EDK to design aleast SOPC system, introduced the co-design theory and Xilinx SOPC co-design flow,and showed how to port software to the embedded system, including U-boot portingand Linux kernel porting code modification. In the last chapter, this paper showed thedesign process of an embedded on-ground detecting device, and expounded a newway of FPGA configuration, called System ACE.This paper indicated that, compared with SOC(System On Chip) based on ASIC,SOPC technology based on FPGA which provides a low-cost and more-agility systemdesign method, will become the mainstream of the embedded system application.
