Virtual Reality(VR), an advanced Human Computer Interaction technique, presents virtual scenes to users depending on computer graphics and stereoscopic vision display technology, and provides users with friendly interactive interface to the virtual world, which brings users strong immersion. In recent years, VR has been developing rapidly and has been applied in many fields, such as entertainment, medicine treatment, military, industry and so on,becoming a research focus. The paper introduces the history and current status of VR technology and the key technology of VR firstly, including three-dimensional vision technology and three-dimensional body tracking technology. Then the most popular VR wearables are decribed with analysis of their advantages and disadvantages. Without connection with a computer, VR glasses can be used with a smartphone and an application software. Thus, we propose a virtual reality system based on VR glasses and smartphones, and present the development process of the VR application software in Unity3 D, including the realization of stereoscopic vision, the realization of head pose tracking based on MEMS gyroscope, the interaction based on MEMS accelerometer and networking, which forms a complete development framework of VR application software. In addition, based on the VR system which consists of VR glasses, smartphones and Untiy3 D engine, the paper presents the detailed process of developing an application software of VR roaming in EAST, involving methods of handling large models, virtual gravity, collision effects and virtual lighting. In order to expand the function of application, we bring in a bluetooth-handle. Finally, we implement a function of virtual maintenance and complete an application software of VR roaming in EAST, which can provide users with immersion.
