In the 21 th century, people take more and more attention to the development of grid industry, due to the rapid development of information technology and human's increasing dependence on the electrical power. Building a more safety, efficient, stability and economic electrical power system, has become the chief duty of electric industry at home and abroad. As an important part of power grid's construction, the automatic meter reading system has a relatively backward development. Traditional remote meter reading system can only have one-way communication from meter to monitoring center, this makes the monitoring center can't collect meter data actively and also can't monitor grid at real-time. In order to solve this problem, this paper presented a remote meter reading system with two-way communication and active collection ability, which is wireless remote meter reading system based on ZigBee.The system was composed of monitoring center, gateway based on ZigBee and GPRS, ZigBee collector and smart meter.We designed and optimized hardware and software of gateway and collector in ZigBee network. As a result, the communication distance of ZigBee is up to 70 m, packet loss rate of ZigBee communication is less than 0.9%, and power consumption of ZigBee node is 70% lower than common GPRS/WiFi module. We made a collector control multiple meters by RS485 bus. This replaced the traditional solution that a communication module controls just one meter. We made the average time of one meter's data collection less than 1 second, avoided communication channel blocking and improved the stability of system. Data collection software was designed to collect and store a variety of electrical data including total power, real-time power and real-time current. Data analysis software was also designed. It uses graphical method to make meter data a MetCur. The abscissa is meter reading time and ordinate is corresponding data of meter. The software can display multiple MetCurs, this makes it possible to compare, analyze and predict the data.We tested the wireless remote meter reading system in a company's dormitory. The system can get the real-time meter power accurately and then store them to the database in the company. Tests showed that the system was feasible, design of hardware and software is reasonable. The system is running in a good condition and can promote the development of remote meter reading system well.
